It wasn’t until the final 10-seconds of the frame where Hayden McNeil (1G, 1A) was able to muster a point shot through to hand the Spartans their first lead. The domination would continue in the third as the Mavericks couldn’t supress the steady flow of Stanstead offense. The Spartans would collect another two goals for the 4-1 victory. Griffin Novak (1G, 1A) scored the first of two Okanagan Hockey Ontario powerplay goals, with his followed up by another OHO goal on the man advantage, this time through Mitchell Goodine. Kareem Baig-Mirza found a response for Selwyn, and with under two and a half minutes to play, they’d find another. Michael Paliotti grabbed the game-winning goal late, and with an empty-netter, led Selwyn to the 4-2 win.
Rothesay Netherwood School (CCM) (7) vs Lower Canada College (2) East
Rothesay Netherwood School had an edge over Lower Canada College on Friday, one that was not obvious, but palpable. Both teams are capable, but Rothesay was clearly the team that had already gotten game action this season, and hence, the sharper of the two teams. An excellent goal from Drew Moores (1G, 1A) early on got the party started for Rothesay, finishing off a solo rush with a perfect finish, the start of Rothesay’s early offensive dominance. Three goals in less than five minutes in the back half of the first period helped Rothesay sprint away with the lead, ultimately rendering LCC’s attempts at a comeback moot. Rothesay ended up grabbing three points each from Dax Lewis (1G, 2A), Will Cole (1G, 2A), and Carter Odell (1G, 2A) and 26 saves on 28 shots from Liam Healy to secure a 7-2 win.
Balmoral Hall School (3) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (1) Women’s U18 Prep
The RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna Women’s U18 Prep team fought through a difficult Thursday night test, ultimately unsuccessful in an overtime loss to RINK Winnipeg despite dominating throughout, outshooting their opponents 45-29. In terms of the unfolding of the game itself, Friday’s clash between RINK Kelowna and Balmoral Hall unfolded similarly to Kelowna’s on Thursday. That’s to say, RINK Kelowna dominated and heavily outshot their opponent, but couldn’t turn it into goal-scoring. Kelowna started the game on the front foot, but a two-minute, fifteen-second span late in the first saw an explosion of offence that would define the game. Rachel Lyver, Jakiah Curle, and Brannagh Rae scored consecutively in lightning-quick fashion, with Balmoral turning a scoreless tie into a 3-0 lead in the blink of an eye. Leni Redden managed to break through for Kelowna on a powerplay in the third, but at every other turn, Balmoral’s Casey Morand was there. Morand marked her season debut with 39 saves on 40 shots, leading her team to a 3-1 win in a game that saw them outshot 40-15.
Calgary International Hockey Academy (3) vs RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (2) U15
It took a mere 89 seconds for the Calgary International Hockey Academy to take the lead, with Jack Blair hitting the net for already the second time this season. Calgary had control of the first period, but their inability to extend the lead bit them early in the second period. In less than two and a half minutes in the early stages of the second, RINK Winnipeg grabbed a pair of quick goals from Jacob McDonald and Jackson Klippenstein, turning their deficit into a 2-1 lead with still 16 minutes to play in the second period. Calgary didn’t take their foot off the gas in the face of a deficit, though, and before the second period was over, they were back on level terms through Emerson Constable (1G, 1A). Brixtin Cenaiko (1G, 1A) scored his fourth goal of the season early in the third period for Calgary to give them a 2-1 lead in a third period that saw CIHA goaltender Oliver Tisnic (29/31) make 15 saves on 15 shots en route to the 3-2 win.
Shawnigan Lake School (1) vs STAR Hockey Academy (3) U18 Prep
The Shawnigan Lake School and STAR Hockey Academy’s U18 Prep squads seemed destined to move into the second period tied up at one, with an early Carter Como (1G, 1A) goal for STAR having been cancelled out by Maddoch Bond’s equalizer. With just three seconds left in the first period, Liam Yackel hit Adam Neilson with a cross-ice pass in the offensive zone, giving Neilson the time to wire a perfect wrist shot into the back of the net to give STAR the 2-1 lead just prior to the break. Griffin Fair (26/27) saved every shot he made from there, with STAR successfully playing out the final forty minutes in strong fashion to hang on for an eventual 3-1 win.
Northern Alberta Xtreme (5) vs Notre Dame Hounds (3) U17
The Northern Alberta Xtreme and the Notre Dame Hounds put together a game that was anything but quiet, with a scoreless opening period giving way to an eight-goal barrage over the final forty minutes. Notre Dame struck first early in the second, with a pair of quick goals from Bevan Ansley and Axton Ross giving the Hounds a 2-0 lead just past the midway point of the frame. The Xtreme’s response, however, was immediate and emphatic. Tyler DeGraves, Ayan Ali, and Bryden Ezekiel (1G, 1A) scored three times in just three minutes and 24 seconds, turning a two-goal deficit into a 3-2 lead before the second period was out. Wesley Goddu scored again just 1:56 into the third, giving Northern Alberta a 4-2 lead. Notre Dame refused to go quietly, with Brayden Leadbetter bringing the Hounds back into the game just under six minutes remaining. But Northern Alberta had one more answer. Cohen Aquino buried the eventual game-winner with 1:16 remaining, before the Xtreme added an insurance goal from the blue line through Colton Aquino to win 5-3.
OHA Edmonton (4) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (1) Women’s U18 Prep
Okanagan Hockey Academy looked to carry the momentum of an opening-period goal into the second, but on Friday in the Women’s U18 Prep division, OHA Edmonton had other plans. Taylor Riley put Okanagan on the board with just 55 seconds remaining in the first, giving her side a narrow lead heading into the intermission, but Edmonton responded quickly in the second, with Ashlyn May tying the game just 2:23 into the period before Riley Cooper (2G, 1A) struck 1:40 later to give Edmonton its first lead. Cooper added another early in the third to complete a two-goal night and stretch the lead to 3-1, before Avery Sam (1G, 1A) added the final goal at the 14:00 mark. OHA Edmonton ended up scoring four unanswered goals after Okanagan’s late first-period opener, turning a one-goal deficit into a convincing 4-1 win, aided by Emma Skolney’s 23 saves on 24 shots.
North Shore Warriors vs Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy U18 Prep
North Shore Warriors and Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy traded blows throughout an even U18 Prep matchup, with the Warriors opening the scoring on the powerplay late in the first period. Otto Puhakka (1G, 1A) converted with just 1:10 remaining, giving North Shore a 1-0 lead heading into the break. Coeur d’Alene answered early in the second, with Matej Bydzovsky (1G, 1A) scoring shorthanded, but the Warriors quickly reclaimed the lead through Landon Kelly. Elliot Fatmi restored parity just 1:38 later before Jack Adams put North Shore back in front late in the frame. The back-and-forth continued into the third, as Easton Margettie tied the game for Coeur d’Alene on the powerplay at 10:36. Winnipeg got on the board early in the third period, with Emery Smith scoring on the power play to cut the deficit to 2–1. They couldn’t find their equalizer, and Edge took their chances late, as Kyson Sylvester scored an empty-net goal with just over three minutes remaining, before Bischoff added another empty-netter shortly after to seal the victory. Edge outshot Winnipeg 42–19 and controlled much of the game offensively, with Raljan Nlwa stopping 18 of 19 shots in the win.
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (2) vs Shawnigan Lake School (4) Women’s U18 Prep
Shawnigan Lake School U18 Prep defeated RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg 4–2 on Friday night at Hockey for All Centre, a result that Shawnigan had to fight for throughout. RINK opened the scoring 1:11 into the second period when Yente Koolwijk scored, but Shawnigan Lake quickly answered with a power-play goal from Tess McGee (1G, 2A) just over two minutes later. Shawnigan’s quick tying goal meant they only trailed for 2:03, and as it turned out, those would be the only minutes Shawnigan would trail for in the game. Shawnigan Lake took control in the third, getting goals from Noe Crookham (1G, 1A) and Lyla Swift early in the period to move ahead 3–1. RINK cut the deficit to one when Rownyn Street (1G, 1A) scored at 16:27, but Jordan Serdachny (1G, 1A) added an empty-net goal late to secure the 4–2 win. Indigenous Sports Academy answered at 12:10 when Archie Tawykawa scored on the power play to make it 2–1, but Notre Dame pulled away in the third period, with Alex Krylov (2G, 1A) scoring twice to complete the 4–1 victory. Vansandt finished with three goals, Espersen and Jake Gerstenbuhler (2G, 1A) each scored twice, and Nolan Scott finished with four assists for SAHA.
North Shore Warriors (1) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (15) U17
There are games in which the story can’t be found on the scoresheet; plenty every weekend in the CSSHL. Unfortunately for the North Shore Warriors, the story of their game on Friday against the Okanagan Hockey Academy is clear to all who viewed the final score. Okanagan grabbed five points each from Kael Schell (2G, 3A) and Blaine Bartsch (5A), and a hat-trick apiece for Krysten Campbell (3G, 1A) and Lux Naka. Seventeen OHA skaters registered a point, with Cayden Rainford scoring his first CSSHL goal.
Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy (1) vs Shawnigan Lake School (4) U17 Prep
Shawnigan Lake School U17 Prep defeated Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy 4–1 on Friday night, largely thanks to the fact that Shawnigan Lake came out flying, scoring twice in the opening 46 seconds. Max Hoeft opened the scoring 24 seconds in, followed by Asher Devries shortly after. Luke Boersen added another late in the second period, and while Wenatchee answered with one from Daniel Trifunovic, Jackson Saskiw restored Shawnigan’s three-goal lead 4:33 into the third period, scoring on the power play to cap off the eventual 4–1 victory. Berkeley Walter was the less busy of the two goaltenders, but still was required to make 34 saves on 35 shots to pick up the win.
Yale Hockey Academy (3) vs BWC Academy (5) U17 Prep
Yale Hockey Academy scored the first goal of the first period and the first goal of the second period in Friday’s U17 Prep clash with BWC, but both times Yale took the lead, BWC stormed back to tie it. Rayman Sall’s goal for Yale was cancelled out by William Simpson (1G, 1A), before Mason Cumiskey’s was, likewise, cancelled by an Ethan Kartadinata penalty shot. BWC took their first lead of the game just 46 seconds into the third thanks to Carter Yule (1G, 1A), before Kaz Westcott got the monkey off his back with his first of the year to make it 4-2. Yale pulled one back, but couldn’t get any closer, and Joel Pini (1G, 1A) made it 5-3 with the dagger later on in the third. BWC were outshot 34-28, but were led to victory by Jordan Bigelow with 31 saves on 34 shots.
STAR Hockey Academy (0) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (6) U17 Prep
Aksel Smith’s goal just 87 seconds into the hockey game on Friday night set the stage for RINK Hockey Kelowna’s evening, one in which they’d get used to being in the lead. Minutes after Smith’s opener, Beckham Monette and Will Tidsbury scored just 25 seconds apart, and Kelowna’s dominance actually rose from there. They wouldn’t pile the goals into the net at the same rate, but Kelowna outshot STAR 17-3 in the second period alone and 32-12 over the final forty minutes. Logan Gardiner (43/49) did well in between the pipes to keep STAR in it, but Max Davis’ 23 saves ended up being enough for a shutout, with him and three points apiece from Jacksen Cutforth (1G, 2A) and Carter Bell (3A) leading Kelowna to the commanding win.
